WAS SRILA PRABHUPADA WRONG?

PART 3 – ARE WOMEN LESS INTELLIGENT

Was Srila Prabhupada wrong then? That is a very crude question and misses all subtler explanations available to us.

Srila Prabhupada clearly accepted traditional material distinctions between male and female social roles. Even from a modern perspective, we need to acknowledge that men and women are different. It is ugly to try to artificially imitate one another in the material.platform. Srila Prabhupada regarded women as generally requiring protection and believed that the average material psychological differences existed. He sometimes described those differences using the psychology and certain biological assumptions available to him at that time.

At the same time, he repeatedly drew an enormous boundary around those observations. They belonged to the material platform. He has clearly said spiritual life does not depend upon brain substance. He said there is no spiritual distinction between man and woman. He recognised Jāhnavā Devī as acharya. He also accepted women as spiritually qualified devotees and repeatedly emphasised that bodily designations disappear on the spiritual platform.

The faithful and honest alternative therefore is not “Prabhupada never said women were less intelligent.” He did.

The coherent reading is that Srila Prabhupada made a broad material generalization about women within the social anthropology he inherited and partly supported it with empirical psychology and misunderstood quotes that has not stood the test of later evidence. Not do the references to dharma shastras and historical political figures like Canakya Pandita. Srila Prabhupada simultaneously taught that material sex does not determine spiritual intelligence, bhakti, transcendental qualification or ultimate eligibility.

That interpretation allows us to respect our Acharya without turning every empirical assumption he repeated into eternal metaphysics that are misused by some so-called followers.

The Real Institutional Problem with the Generalization Lens

Using Srila Prabhupada’s quotes to mistreat or abuse women as it has happened in the history of Srila Prabhupada’s institution, is not just beecause of one sentence. It was not that women are less intelligent. It is the what that statement turned into –

  1. A woman’s judgement should carry less weight
  2. A man should decide what is spiritually safe for her
  3. A woman who resists male direction confirms that she needs more direction
  4. An independent woman is suspicious (like there is true independence for anyone in this world)
  5. A single or divorced woman is spiritually risky
  6. A woman reporting misconduct may simply be confused, emotional, rebellious or improperly influenced
  7. Male interpretation acquires a presumption of credibility that female testimony does not

None of those propositions is contained in Bhagavad-gītā 10.10 or 10.34. None follows from Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s criterion of kṛṣṇa-tattva-vettā.

Protection does not mean inferior intelligence

This distinction must become explicit. One may believe that men and women have different vulnerabilities. Also that traditional family structures provide important protections. Manu smriti’s guardianship model when applied with mutual respect could be welcome. But to say need for protection is equal to lack of intelligence...intelligence itself is multi layered.

A child may require protection because the child lacks mature judgement. An adult woman may require physical protection because average male physical strength is greater (this requirement also has been transcended by many women). An elderly man may require protection because of frailty…does not make him less intelligent.

Many more such examples – a king requires military protection. A sanyasi may require institutional protection against false accusations or inappropriate situations. None of these logically establishes diminished cognition.

Then what is the issue?? The issue is with protection becomes jurisdiction. In the age of kali rebellion is already embedded in the memory chip we are born with. The approach and application of relationships are completely topsy turvy. Relationships are increasingly becoming extremely heavy cognitive load on individuals even in historically unselfish relationships like parent-child – what to speak of marriages where love equality and tolerance need to play a role.

A senior Vaishnava recently mentioned that it is better to remain unmarried in kali yuga. I would tend to agree unless the two individuals coming together have been sufficiently trained to really understand the purpose of marriage, relationship and bhakti. And that cognizance cannot be achieved by stuffing down people’s throats archaic and expired points from manu smriti or Canakya niti.

If the protector begins deciding what a woman should think, who she should associate with what her marriage shold look like, how she should relate with her children, whether she can work, whether her account of an issue is less credible than that of a man and most importantly whether her spiritual understanding is valid.

Now we are no longer discussing protection. It is the domain of the topic of authority. And that brings us back to the point of the natural rebellion of a kali yuga jiva

The Deepest Contradiction is Theological

Suppose we insist on the following equation: female body means less intelligence means less reliable discrimination means necessary male authority, then we are negating Lord Krishna’s own words and spiritual architecture?

Krishna identifies medhā among feminine opulences. He also gives buddhi-yoga according to loving devotion to any jiva. Prahlāda maharaj concludes that a woman can also understand spirit and matter. Lord Kapila gives the transcendental Sankhya philosophy to this mother Devahuti. The Bhagavatam preserves Queen Kuntī’s theology and approach to the Supreme lord as a directional light to humanity. The Upaniṣads preserve Maitreyī and Gārgī examples. Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu identifies knowledge of Krishna-tattva as the qualification for a guru. Srila Prabhupada himself recognizes Jahnava Devi as an acharya. And was one of the first acharyas to make women priests to worship at the temple altars along with receiving Gayatri diksha.

At some point the theory and the consequent preaching has to become sophisticated enough to contain and make way for all the evidence.

Otherwise we are not defending shastra. We are defending one sentence against shastra. And it is a disservice to both the Guru and shastra.

The Alternative Reading

A more coherent Vaishnava understanding is possible without letting down an acharya like Srila Prabhupada.

Traditional statements describing women as less intelligent arose inside a social world in which women often had different education, ritual eligibility, social responsibilities and legal independence from men. Srila Prabhupada accepted many of those traditional assumptions and sometimes reinforced them using the psychology he had learned. Those statements should therefore be read as material generalizations situated inside a social framework, not as an eternal ontology of the female jīva.

Where actual qualification appears, Vaishnava works repeatedly asks us to recognize qualification. Where devotion appears, Lord Krishna supplies intelligence. Where Krishna-tattva appears, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu recognizes the capacity to guide.

Where bodily designation disappears, Srila Prabhupada himself says the distinction between man and woman disappears with it.

That gives us a principled hierarchy:

  1. The social observation cannot override siddhānta.
  2. Dharmashastras are time bound and may lack universal applicability in this age.
  3. Niti shastra is not spiritual work or quality for scriptural eternity
  4. An expired statistical generalization cannot become a verdict on an individual.
  5. And material sex cannot become a ceiling upon spiritual intelligence.

Read Srila Prabhupada Completely

The greatest disservice to Srila Prabhupada is to fragment his words and weaponize them without doing research of all available sources and references of sadhu and shastra. One group collects the statements that offend modern sensibilities and constructs a misogynist view. Another collects the statements affirming transcendental equality and constructs a modern egalitarian view. Neither gives us the actual person.

Srila Prabhupada was a Gauḍīya Vaishnava acharya carrying an ancient theological tradition into the heavily contaminated manifestation of pre-independence era and post-colonial twentieth century. He also carried social assumptions inherited from his time, place, education and traditional culture. Sometimes those worlds sat comfortably together. And at other times, they did not.

The mature response is not panic or blind defence. It is discrimination.

And here is the beauty – women do not need to be declared superior to men in order to reject the proposition that every female jīva enters spiritual life carrying an intellectual deficit. That proposition is unnecessary.

So, are women less intelligent?

The final counter question, does the answer matter if you are unable to save your spiritual life and your family? You may win the battle but you will lose the war.

Some traditional texts contain broad negative generalizations about women. They should neither be hidden nor converted uncritically into modern cognitive science. Some material cognitive differences between male and female populations do exist. Current research finds different average strengths in particular domains and continues to debate small differences in some global measures. Men and women are wired differently and process things differently. Neither is a proof of strata.

And on the question that matters/should matter most to a Vaishnava, have you thought about it clearly?

  1. Spiritual intelligence is not awarded by gender
  2. Krishna gives buddhi-yoga according to bhakti
  3. The guru is recognised by Krishna-tattva
  4. The pandita sees the soul equally – irrespective of the spiritual mturity of who he is seeing.
  5. And Krishna Himself places medha among His feminine manifestations.

The problem was never that Srila Prabhupada uttered a difficult sentence. The deeper problem began when we stopped reading everything else after it without developing discernment and discretion.
